NTC Keynote Speaker Jeff Havens

Jeff Havens is not your typical keynote speaker. Jeff has spoken to over 1,000 businesses across North America and Asia and provides serious solutions in a seriously funny way.

US vs. THEM
There are four distinct generations operating side-by-side in today’s working world. There are differences between those four generations, and if you’ve ever been frustrated by how impossible it seems to employ four different strategies to manage four distinct generations and if you’ve ever felt like you’re the only one who’s being asked to make any changes, then Us vs.Them is exactly what you need.

In this humorous presentation, you’ll learn a simpler way of looking at your own generational picture, and you’ll also learn how to understand, recognize, and resolve every generational issue facing today’s workforce. You will walk away with all of the knowledge you’ll need to address 100% of the generational issues you’ll face for the rest of your career.

So, get ready to laugh more and learn more than you ever thought possible. Because improving your generational issues doesn’t have to be boring.

Economic Updates

Job Openings

  • Latest JOLTS report shows there were 855,000 job openings in manufacturing in January. The number of jobs available continues to exceed pre-pandemic levels. Over the past 10 months, job openings in the sector have averaged 873,000, including the record 943,000 in July.
  • Total quits in the manufacturing sector rose from 322,000 in December to 331,000 in January, a new record. That is approximately 2.6% of the manufacturing workforce.
  • JOLTS Link: https://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/jolts.pdf

New York Fed Manufacturing Survey
“Business activity declined in New York State for the first time since early in the pandemic, according to firms responding to the March 2022 Empire State Manufacturing Survey. The headline general business conditions index fell fifteen points to -11.8, its lowest level since May 2020. New orders and shipments declined modestly, while unfilled orders increased. Delivery times continued to lengthen substantially, and inventories expanded.”

FOMC Monetary Policy Statement
The most important rate in the world is the cost of money.
“The federal funds rate is the FOMC’s main policy rate. Changes in the federal funds rate trigger changes in other short- and medium-term interest rates, the foreign exchange value of the U.S. dollar, and other asset prices that influence households’ and businesses’ spending and investment decisions.”- Chicago Fed https://www.chicagofed.org/research/dual-mandate/the-federal-funds-rate

Today, the FOMC announced “The Committee seeks to achieve maximum employment and inflation at the rate of 2 percent over the longer run. With appropriate firming in the stance of monetary policy, the Committee expects inflation to return to its 2 percent objective and the labor market to remain strong. In support of these goals, the Committee decided to raise the target range for the federal funds rate to 1/4 to 1/2 percent and anticipates that ongoing increases in the target range will be appropriate. In addition, the Committee expects to begin reducing its holdings of Treasury securities and agency debt and agency mortgage-backed securities at a coming meeting.”

Chairman Powell had already preannounced a quarter point hike to Congress. This was no surprise, and disappointing to many who thought that the current round of inflation needs stronger medicine.

With Consumer prices up 0.8% in February  (Food up 1%, Energy up 3.5%, and Gasoline up 6.6%) there is no denying the need to take strong action against inflation.

Producer prices up 0.8% in February- up 10.0% over last 12 months. This is the rate that affects our shops, and will ultimately drive higher the price of goods purchased by the consumers.
One can  use the average of the CPI and the PPI to indicate the current level of inflation across the entire economy. With CPI up 7.9% over the past year, and PPI up 10.0% we are experiencing inflation of 8.95% over the past year.

Grainger Show

On February 27 and 28, PMPA President Aneesa Muthana (Pioneer Service Inc.) joined Executive Director Cate Smith and Manager of Chapter Development Matt Gilmore at the 2022 Grainger Show held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

This was both Cate’s and Aneesa’s first time attending the show, and they appreciate Matt’s assistance in scheduling meetings and a tour of the show, led by Grainger’s Randeep Arneja who many of you may remember meeting at PMTS. Manufactured Goods New Orders
New Orders for Manufactured Goods increased by 1.4%  ($7.6 billion) to a record $544.2 billion in January. This New Orders indicator has been up eight of the last nine months, and up twenty of the last twenty months, according to the US Census Bureau.

According to the report, Transportation Equipment (up three consecutive months) led the increase, up 3.4%  or $2.9 billion.

Shipments (also up 8 of the past nine months and 20 of the last 21 months) increased 1.1% or $6.2 billion to $536 billion. Machinery (up ten of the last eleven months) led the increase, $1.0 billion or 2.7 percent to $38.9 billion.

Overall, the manufacturing sector continued to expand strongly—despite lingering supply chain, workforce and pricing pressures—with new orders soaring 13.6% year-over-year.

ISM PMI
ISM PMI Index rose in February on the strength of fast growing New Orders – 21 consecutive months of growth, with February topping January by 1 percentage point.

According to ISM, “Demand expanded, with the (1) New Orders Index increasing and remaining in strong growth territory, supported by stronger expansion of New Export Orders, (2) Customers’ Inventories Index remaining at a very low level and (3) Backlog of Orders Index increasing to historically high levels.”

Manufacturing Activity- Dallas Fed
A great report!

“Texas factory activity continued to increase but at a slightly slower pace in February, according to business executives responding to the Texas Manufacturing Outlook Survey. The production index, a key measure of state manufacturing conditions, came in at 14.5, down two points from January but still indicative of above-average output growth.

Other measures of manufacturing activity also indicated continued growth. The new orders index pushed up three points to 23.1, while the growth rate of orders index held steady at 12.6.  Both readings are significantly above average. The capacity utilization index was unchanged at 11.5, and the shipments index rebounded 15 points to 23.5 after its January drop.

Perceptions of broader business conditions improved in February.”

Business Trends Report – January 2022

January 2022 continues the positivity, as our PMPA Business Trends Sales Index out performs the FED’s Industrial Production and Manufacturing Indexes, as well as the five year average for the January Index – up seven and a quarter percent (7.25%) from December 2021’s remarkably high close.

Lead times are as high in this report as they were last January in 2021- you know how that turned out. There are plenty of issues in the larger world to give us pause, but the consensus of your peers (71 respondents), as given by their data, is one of continued positivity and performance for our precision machining shops in the quarter ahead.

Business Trends Report – January 2022

ITR Economics Forecast Report
January 2022

Now is when your efforts at managing can really make a difference!

Despite all of the angst and nail biting issues in the press these days, the US economy is strong and will continue to be strong in the coming years. Continued (but SLOWER!) growth is likely for the next couple of YEARS.  Fears of an impending recession are misplaced, but slowing growth provides us with opportunities to reflect, reconfigure, and rebuild for a successful and sustainable longer timeline.

Automation, workforce retention, upskilling, and talent acquisition should be our top management priorities going into this slower growth phase of the business cycle. Inflation is here as well –  raw material prices up by high double digit percentages – demand that you re-examine your new AND EXISTING contracts to make sure that you are not including fifty dollar bills of excess unrecovered costs in every box of parts you ship.

Most of the markets that we serve remain in accelerating growth, but a couple have moved into a slower growth phase. None of our bellwether markets are in recession.

The brand may be by design or default and creating a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats (SWOT) analysis can give you insight as to what your brand actually is, ways improve your brand and ways to use your brand to retain and recruit employees.
