PMPA Applauds House Passage of Job Training Bill

Washington, D.C. – PMPA applauded the U.S. House of Representatives for passing on September 13, H.R. 5587, the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act. This action puts Congress on the path for the first time in more than a decade to reauthorize the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act, which provides federal support to state and local career and technical education (CTE) programs.

“In an election year full of partisan bickering, it is nice to see our lawmakers come together and pass a bill that will support thousands of manufacturing companies across the country and countless of workers,” said PMPA Executive Director Bernie Nagle. “The overwhelming majority of PMPA members are facing a critical shortage of qualified workers to run manufacturing equipment that can cost millions of dollars.”

The U.S. Department of Labor recently reported that manufacturing job openings hit a fifteen-year high. The August 2016 report showed the number of available positions available across the country increased to 353,000, up from 311,000 in 2015. PMPA believes passing a bill addressing the skills gap, such as CTE reauthorization, will help fill these well paying positions.

“PMPA members are now calling on the Senate to take action and pass a robust bill providing the technical training resources employees and employers need,” added Mr. Nagle. “U.S. companies should not be turning away business because they can’t find qualified employees; this is why we need Congress to act now.”

Attention now shifts to the U.S. Senate, where the Education Committee continues to work on an approach to this bipartisan issue. PMPA hopes lawmakers can quickly reconcile their differences and send a bill to President Obama for his signature before he leaves office.
